Have you ever counted the hours you spend in front of the digital screen all day? The answer is a big NO because we are used to spending countless hours in front of smart gadgets. Besides, we don’t want any interruption during our screen time; neither give a break to our eyes, not even for a few seconds.

This is exactly my story. My profession demands me to spend hours and hours in front of the laptop, regardless of how this will affect my eyes. Many of us might not know that these digital gadgets emit blue light, which could be bad for our eyes. 

I usually spend more than 12 hours in front of my desktop. Similarly, around 70% of the total population spend their precious hours in front of smartphones, tablets, laptops, and TVs. This gives rise to discuss the hot topic “why is blue light bad for our eyes?”

Blue light is a type of ultraviolet light with the shortest wavelength. Usually, it is good and has many positive aspects on human health, but if it is oozing from electronic devices, they may be bad for our eyes if we continue to expose our eyes to these lights. 

Blue lights are harmful to the eyes because they are associated with developing the following symptoms. 

  • Blurred vision or short of sight: blue lights can travel to the deepest part of the eye retina and affect the retinal cells, resulting in blurred vision and short-sightedness. Moreover, if we continue to expose our eyes to blue lights for a prolonged period, we might get blind. 
  • Dry eyes: this condition refers to the state when the eyes start developing the burning sensation and a continuous feeling of irritation. 
  • Eye-strain: it is a condition in which we counterstrike with blurry vision and redness in eyes and sensitivity to light.
  • Computer vision syndrome: as the name suggests, this condition is associated with the prolonged use of computers resulting in headache, neck and shoulder pain, and blurred vision. 

There are no secrets behind how blue light is adversely affecting our eyes, especially the most sensitive part retina, which is the main target for blue lights. 

Unfortunately, as we grow old, our body stops producing certain substances necessary to regulate different life cycle parts. For instance, the production of vitamin E level declines as we start aging. This is an essential vitamin and involved in the sharp vision. 

Researchers proved we could have a deficiency of vitamin E levels at an early age if we expose ourselves to blue light for a more extended period. If we don’t have a robust immune system, this situation could also result in partial or total blindness. 

According to researchers, every year, more than 2 million cases of age-related short-sightedness is reported. However, another research suggests that around 1 million new evidence has also come in the limelight for myopia in young adults in recent years. 

Blue lights are not only bad for the eyes, but it will also affect our health. Blue lights are primarily involved in regulating the circadian rhythm. But if our body continues to bring in to the light, this cycle will get affected, which could result in irregular or loss of sleep.

To prevent my eyes from blindness and other related damages and to regulate my circadian rhythm accurately, I have adapted some precautionary measures like I use blue light blocking glasses while using my laptop. Besides, I always take a little break from work to relax my eyes.

Moreover, for relaxing my eye muscles, I use cotton pads dipped in cold water over my eyes. This remedy helps me to prevent redness and irritation in my eyes.

From the above discussion, we can conclude that blue lights are the main culprits behind eye-related problems like headaches, swelling of eyes, irritation, and redness in eyes after prolonged use of smart electronic devices. 

However, we can prevent these symptoms from appearing by taking some precautions; still, these symptoms persist; then, it’s high time to book an eye specialist appointment. 

The best way to prevent our eyes from the effect of these blue light is to use blue light blocking glasses while sitting in front of digital screens because our eyes are as precious as us.
